The Bowls Development Alliance (BDA) is seeking an individual to join its Board as a Non-Executive Director (NED).

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction and governance of an organisation at the heart of community sport across England. As a Non-Executive Director, you will support effective decision-making by providing oversight, insight and constructive challenge.

Working alongside the Chair, Vice Chair, Managing Director and fellow Board members, you will help guide the BDA as it continues to grow participation in bowls and support clubs and volunteers across the country.

You will contribute to Board discussions, support the development of strategy and help ensure effective oversight of organisational performance, finance, risk and resources.

We are looking for someone with experience in a leadership, professional or advisory context, who can bring sound judgement, contribute to strategic discussions and work collaboratively as part of a Board.

Key Responsibilities

•Contribute to the development and review of the BDA’s strategic direction

•Provide constructive challenge to Board discussions and decision making

•Support effective governance and Board performance

•Monitor organisational performance against agreed objectives

•Support the Managing Director as a critical friend

Time Commitment: Approximately 4 Board meetings per year, plus occasional committee meetings and preparation time

Location: Board meetings are typically held in person, in Coventry

What we are looking for

•Experience in a leadership, professional or advisory role

•An understanding of governance, strategy and organisational oversight (this may come from Board, committee or professional experience)

•Strong communication and relationship-building skills

•Independent judgement and confidence to challenge constructively

•A commitment to inclusion, diversity and equality

Knowledge of bowls is not essential, but enthusiasm for community sport is highly valued.

We are committed to broadening the diversity of perspectives on our Board and value the insight that comes from different backgrounds and lived experiences.
We welcome applications from individuals applying for their first Board role.

Desirable Skills and Experience

We would particularly welcome candidates who can bring:

•Knowledge of, or interest in, environmental sustainability or ESG, supporting the organisation’s developing sustainability approach
•Lived experience or insight that brings additional diversity of perspective to Board discussions
•Experience of working with community organisations, participation programmes or inclusive sport initiatives

This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the future of the Bowls Development Alliance and help ensure bowls continues to thrive as an inclusive and accessible sport across England.

The BDA welcomes applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, particularly those currently under-represented at Board level.

The appointment is for a four-year term, with the possibility of renewal. This is a voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed.

To apply, please submit:

•An up-to-date CV outlining your career history and experience
•A covering letter explaining your interest in the role and suitability
•Deadline: 29 April
