Location: Leicester
Salary: £26,500 per annum
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm
Contract: Fixed term for 12 months

Not For Profit People are working with a community-focused charity to recruit a Welfare Benefits Adviser to help local people maximise their income, access the financial support they are entitled to and navigate the welfare benefits system.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced welfare benefits professional who is passionate about making a real difference to individuals and families facing financial challenges.

The organisation works to improve the quality of life for local residents, reduce social inequalities and build a stronger, more inclusive community through advice, support and community based initiatives.

About the role

As Welfare Benefits Adviser, you will provide high-quality, person-centred advice and support to individuals and households, helping them understand their entitlements and access the benefits and financial assistance available to them.

You will work directly with clients through face-to-face appointments, telephone, email and video support, ensuring they receive clear, accurate and sensitive advice tailored to their circumstances.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out welfare benefits checks to help clients maximise their income.
  • Supporting clients with new benefit claims, renewal applications and completing claim forms, both online and on paper.
  • Following up on cases and discussing unsuccessful claims with the wider advice team to identify potential support with mandatory reconsiderations or appeals.
  • Accepting referrals from local partner organisations and developing effective working relationships with external agencies.
  • Identifying wider issues, including debt and housing difficulties, and making appropriate internal referrals or signposting clients to specialist services.
  • Maintaining accurate case records, monitoring outcomes and contributing to service reporting and quality assurance.
  • Ensuring all advice and casework comply with relevant procedures, quality standards and data protection requirements.
  • Managing your workload effectively, meeting targets and keeping up to date with changes in welfare benefits legislation, policies and procedures.

About you

You will have recent experience of delivering face-to-face welfare benefits advice and a sound, up-to-date understanding of the welfare benefits system. You will be confident supporting people from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who may be experiencing financial hardship or other challenging circumstances.

You will also bring:

  • 2 years recent experience of providing welfare and/or benefits advice, in a paid or voluntary capacity.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and sensitively.
  • A non-judgemental approach and a strong understanding of confidentiality.
  • The ability to work independently, use your initiative and manage competing priorities.
  • Good IT skills, including experience of Microsoft Word and Excel, electronic case management systems and accurate case recording.
  • Strong administrative, organisational and time-management skills.
  • The ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues, referral partners and external agencies.
  • GCSE passes in English and Maths.
  • A commitment to equality, diversity and helping people access the support they need.

A Standard DBS check will be required.

Desirable experience and qualifications

It would be advantageous if you have experience of using the Advice Pro case recording system, hold an IMA Certificate in Money Advice Practice, or have a Level 4 qualification in Revenues and Welfare Benefits Practice.

Why apply?

You will be joining a service committed to helping people improve their financial circumstances, access the support available to them and overcome barriers to financial wellbeing.

If you are passionate about supporting people and improving lives, we would love to hear from you.
